September 3, 2010 - Pioneer League (PL)
Idaho Falls Chukars News Release
Trailing after six innings, the Chukars scored five unanswered runs on the way to a 5-2 win over the Orem Owlz Friday night at Melaleuca Field. The Owlz committed five errors to help the Chukars win for the first time in a week.
The Owlz scored two runs in the first inning before Chukars' starting pitcher Chad Blauer shut the Owlz down for the rest of his six innings. In fact, after Blauer was hit by a batted ball to start the fourth inning, he retired nine straight with four strikeouts before he was taken out. Blauer finished with eight punchouts and only two runs allowed in six innings for a quality start. Despite the strong effort, Blauer would not earn the win, which went to Edwin Carl. As the only other Chukars' pitcher to take the hill Friday, Carl had seven strikeouts and allowed only two base runners in three scoreless innings. The win was the first of Carl's professional career.
The Chukars were held scoreless until a four-run seventh inning. The inning started with three consecutive singles by Jovan Pickett, Reggie Taylor and Cam Conner. All three would score in the inning, as the Owlz had two errors to help move the runners around bases. The Chukars added another run in the eighth inning when Pickett, who reached on another hit, scored on a sacrifice fly.
Pickett was the offense star of the game, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored. Pickett had half of the team's hits, as the Chukars outhit the Owlz 8-5 and all of the hits for the Chukars were singles. Conner finished 2-for-3 with two walks, a run, and an RBI. In addition, the Chukars stole five bases without being caught stealing. Conner had two steals and Pickett had one as well.
The win snapped a six game losing streak for the Chukars, who are now 8-24 in the second half and 24-46 overall. The Chukars and Owlz play game two of the series Saturday night at Melaleuca Field. Game time is set for 7:15 and a fireworks show will come at the conclusion of the game.
