Chukars Cruise to 21-6 Victory over Vibes

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Idaho Falls Chukars (10-3) put up all of their runs in the first five innings, winning 21-6 over the Rocky Mountain Vibes (1-12) on Wednesday night at UC Health Park. The Chukars connected for 22 hits against Vibes pitching, and currently lead the series against the Vibes 2-0.

The Chukars loaded up the bases in the first inning against Jesus Rios (L, 0-4) on a single from Steve Barmakian, when Hunter Hisky reached on a throwing error by Ulysses Cantu, and a walk by Brady West. Dusty Stroup struck out, but the ball was put into play. Barmakian raced home from third,and scored sliding in when the throw from catcher Jesus Rabago sailed over Rios and into the Vibes dugout, allowing Hisky to add in a run to make it 2-0. West scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

Eric Callahan drew a walk in the second, swiped second base and scored on a Barmakian single to put the Chukars up 4-0.

Six runs came across to score in the third, putting the game out of reach early. West doubled with one out, and later scored on a wild pitch, growing the lead to 5-0. The Chukars then connected for four consecutive RBI singles from Rick Phillips, Barmakian, Matt Feinstein, and Hisky against Rios and reliever Jose Mora that made it 10-0 ballgame.

The Chukars opened the game up further in the fourth, when Idaho Fals put up a nine-spot on the Vibes with 14 batters coming to the plate. Idaho Falls loaded up the bases on a Stroup single, a Sam Troyer walk and another single from Callahan. With one out, Phillips and Barmakian singled to drive in two runs, padding the lead, 12-0. Hisky singled to drive in his third run of the game, chasing Mora from the game. Facing Johnny Morrell, West cleared the bases with a triple, putting it further out of reach 15-0. Four more runs scored RBI singles from Troyer and Kevin Elefante, and a double from Callahan that put the Chukars up 19-0.

The Chukars capped the scoring in the top of the fifth, with Stroup driving in a run on a fielder's choice and Troyer singling in Hisky from third to give the Chukars a 21-0 advantage.

Daniel Silva (W, 1-1) tossed 6.1 innings, the longest of any Chukars starter this season, striking out five. He was pulled from the game after giving up four runs in the bottom of the seventh, which made it 21-4.

Damon Ellis emerged from the bullpen and closed out the game, striking out four and giving up two runs in the bottom of the ninth that resulted in the 21-6 final score.

The series continues tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. MDT. Idaho Falls will start RHP Jake Binder (2-0, 1.64 ERA) and the Vibes' starter is TBD.
