Biloxi Shuckers News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - Behind Jackson Chourio's four-hit, four-RBI and three extra-base hit day, the Biloxi Shuckers (30-28) held off a late rally from the Montgomery Biscuits (28-30) to win the series opener, 10-8, at Riverwalk Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Shuckers' offense started early with two runs in the first inning. Tyler Black reached on an error and a walk from Noah Campbell pushed him to second. A double steal advanced the pair to second and third before Wes Clarke drove in Black with a sacrifice fly to center, giving Biloxi a 1-0 lead. Jeferson Quero drove in Campbell with a single to left that extended the lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the inning, Ronny Simon scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
In the second, the Shuckers scored two more off a two-run home run from Zavier Warren to left. The home run marked Warren's first in June, and the first for Biloxi since last Tuesday. The offense continued in the fourth with an RBI double from Chourio, his second double of the day, that gave Biloxi a 5-1 lead. One inning later, Chourio launched a three-run home run that gave Biloxi an 8-1 lead. The home run helped drive in his 40th RBI of the year, a team-best.
In the bottom of the fifth, an RBI triple from Ronny Simon and a balk brought him to make it 8-3. Biloxi got one of the runs back in the sixth with a solo home run from Wes Clarke, his ninth extra-base hit against the Biscuits this year. The Biscuits then matched the run with a wild pitch that scored Junior Caminero from third.
After a scoreless seventh, the Shuckers used a sacrifice fly from Quero to score Noah Campbell and increase the lead to 10-4. In the inning, Tyler Black reached after getting hit by a pitch and stole second, his Double-A-leading 35th of the year. The Biscuits, however, jump-started the comeback with a three-run home run from Diego Infante that made it 10-7.
In the ninth, Simon led off with a walk and was pushed in on an RBI single from Austin Shenton. Junior Caminero then singled Shenton to second and Logan Driscoll walked to load the bases, and brought Zach Vennaro into the game.
With the bases loaded and the winning run at first, Vennaro's first pitch was bounced up the middle, and Felix Valerio beat Logan Driscoll in a footrace to the bag to secure a 10-8 win for Biloxi and Vennaro's second save of the year. Christian Mejias (4-3) earned the win after five innings and a career-high 101 pitches. Patrick Wicklander (1-1) took the loss for the Biscuits.
The teams will meet tomorrow at 6;35 p.m. for the second game of the series. Russell Smith is set to make his first Double-A start for Biloxi while Cole Wilcox is set to start for Montgomery.
