Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release

CARSON, Calif. (Monday, Feb. 10, 2014) - Led by two first-half goals, Chivas USA downed the Orange County Blues, 2-0, Monday morning at the StubHub Center's Field 6. The Red-and-White went ahead on rookie midfielder Thomas McNamara's first preseason tally and later doubled their lead when Matthew Fondy knocked in his second goal of camp against his former club.

The Goats got off to a quick start against their PDL opponent and had their first look at opening the scoreboard by the third minute. After pushing the ball up the right flank, Eric Avila played a cross into the box to Fondy near the back post. The forward got on the end of the pass for a clean header but pushed his attempt wide right of the post. Five minutes later, midfielder Mauro Rosales whipped a low cross through the six-yard box from the left side intended for Carlos Bocanegra, but the defender's tap-in try was turned away by goalkeeper Neal Kitson.

After getting into promising spots in their final third, the Rojiblancos went up in the 16th minute when McNamara was able to clean up near the doorstep after a pair of deflected shots. Forward Erick Torres' initial shot from about 18 yards out was denied by Kitson and the Blues keeper was then able to deflect Fondy's follow-up attempt. However, he could not come up with the three-save sequence, as McNamara delivered the tally inside the left post.

Fondy - who played for the Blues in 2013 before joining Chivas USA in August - got the start up top alongside Torres and delivered his second goal of the preseason in as many games in the 27th minute off a set piece. Positioned along the left flank, Rosales sent his service into the goal area, where Fondy's tally pushed the advantage to 2-0.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, the Red-and-White brought on several subs at once. Like the first half, the Goats continued to get solid looks and began getting into range soon after entering the match. Midfielder Carlo Chueca squared up to goal in the 79th minute and got off a shot that sailed high of the crossbar. A minute later, forward Adolfo Bautista worked the ball on the right side of the box and created enough space for himself to unleash a strike, but the ball was pushed just outside the left post.

The Red-and-White came within inches of going up a third goal in the final seconds of the contest, but midfielder Bryan de la Fuente's shot from about 15 yards out crashed into the crossbar, keeping the result at 2-0.

Chivas USA will continue their third week of camp, as they face Western Conference side Real Salt Lake on Thursday in their third official scrimmage of camp. The Goats will then head to Las Vegas to battle the Colorado Rapids on Sunday in the Las Vegas ProSoccer Challenge.
