Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release

CARSON, Calif. (Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013) - Chivas USA shut out D.C. United, 1-0, Sunday evening at the StubHub Center led by Erick "Cubo" Torres' team-high seventh goal. With the win goalkeeper and captain Dan Kennedy earned his third clean sheet of the season to help the Rojiblancos remain unbeaten in five of their last six matches at home.

The sides exchanged the match's first solid looks at opening the scoreboard beginning in the 15th minute when Nick DeLeon sent a low cross from the right side of the box to a cutting Conor Doyle in the short area. But Kennedy and the rest of the Red-and-White defense managed to break up the play. Three minutes later the Goats responded with Carlos Alvarez's shot from the right side of the box after Torres played him a chip over the top.

The Red-and-White went to their bench early in the match as midfielder Eric Avila came on for Julio Morales in the 28th minute. Alvarez continued to be active in the attacking third after the substitution, as he got off his second strike of the game in the 33rd minute on frame which United keeper Bill Hamid was able to control.

Locked in a scoreless tie in the second half, the Rojiblancos began peppering the opposing goal beginning in the 50th minute, when Avila unleashed a strike on top of the 18-yard line just right of the arc. Avila's shot was on frame and headed inside the far post and it took a last-second diving save by Hamid to his right to get a hand on the shot. Chivas would not be denied a minute later, however, when Edgar Mejia chipped a pass into the box that grazed off Bryan de la Fuente near the penalty spot, where Torres immediately pounced on the ball and put it past Hamid to give the Goats the 1-0 lead. The 20-year-old striker from Guadalajara has now tallied seven scores in nine games.

Playing a goal up, the Goats continued to get into dangerous spots in the attacking third and nearly doubled their lead in the 79th minute off a free kick on the right seam taken by Alvarez. The first-year midfielder played the ball just outside of the short area where it took a goal-line save by Hamid to keep out Torres' header. United brought on their final sub three minutes later in search of the equalizer, but the Chivas' defense remained stout behind Kennedy's performance in goal.

Chivas USA return next Saturday, Sept. 14, when they host Western Conference foe the Portland Timbers in the second leg of their two-game homestand at the StubHub Center beginning at 7:30 p.m. (PT). The match will mark the third and final meeting of the season-series between the sides and will be televised in English on KDOC and in Spanish on MundoFOX 22 KWHY. The game can also be heard in Spanish on W Radio 690 AM. For more information visit cdchivasusa.com and follow us on Twitter @cdchivasusa and Facebook.com/chivasusa .
