Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - A goal by Academy forward Anthony Macchione in the closing minutes of the match helped the Portland Timbers Reserves earn a 1-1 draw against the visiting Real Salt Lake Reserves in MLS Reserve League play at JELD-WEN Field on Sunday evening.
After a scoreless first half, the Real Salt Lake Reserves (5-3-4, 19pts) claimed the lead in the 53rd minute. Forward Devon Sandoval, pressured by Portland's Futty Danso, received a pass in the box, turned and buried the ball near the far right post past Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson. Sandoval also scored in a 1-0 victory for the Real Salt Lake Reserves last week over the Timbers Reserves at America First Field.
The Real Salt Lake Reserves received a red card in the 65th minute, given to forward Olmes Garcia following a hard tackle on Portland defender Niko De Vera. Real Salt Lake would be shorthanded for the remaining 25 minutes of the match.
The Timbers Reserves (4-4-3, 15pts) took advantage, and found the game-tying goal in the 88th minute off the foot of Macchione. A member of the Timbers U-18 Academy, Macchione buried a strike from the top right corner of the box that deflected off of Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Lalo Fernandez and into the net. The goal was Macchione's first with the Timbers Reserves.
Gleeson finished the night with six saves against the Real Salt Lake Reserves.
The Timbers Reserves travel to Los Angeles in their final road match of the MLS Reserve League season to face the Chivas USA Reserves on Sunday, Sept. 15, at the StubHub Center; kickoff is set for 11 a.m. (Pacific).
