Real Salt Lake News Release

PORTLAND (Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013) - The Real Salt Lake Reserves (5-3-4, 19 points, West #1) earned a solid road point on Sunday night, drawing the Portland Timbers Reserves (4-4-3, 15 points, West #4) 1-1 at JELD-WEN Field despite going down a man in the 65th minute.

Real Salt Lake got on the board first, taking the lead in the 53rd minute through FW Devon Sandoval. The Claret-and-Cobalt launched a long throw into the box from the left side, with Sandoval collecting at the near post. The rookie striker quickly turned and hit a shot on frame, squeaking his 12-yard right-footer past Portland GK Jake Gleeson and inside the near post.

The Claret-and-Cobalt went down a man in the 65th minute, when FW Olmes Garcia was shown a straight red card for a tackle on Portland DF Nico De Vera.

Despite playing with 10-men, RSL more than held its own in the final 25 minutes, controlling a decent amount of possession and consistently threatening Portland's goal.

Of course, Garcia's ejection opened up space for the Timbers, which took advantage and equalized in the 87th. FW Anthony Macchione collected a DF Jacob Kempf pass in the top right corner of the area, turning toward goal and firing a 15-yard shot that found the inside of the near post.

Real Salt Lake will return to action on Friday, when it will take on Seattle Sounders FC at 8:00 p.m. MT at CenturyLink Field. Friday's match will be nationally televised on the NBC Sports Network. The Claret-and-Cobalt Reserves will take on Seattle Sounders FC Reserves on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. MT at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash.
