Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, Calif. (Monday, July 27, 2009) - Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton, currently experiencing one of the best seasons of his 13-year MLS career, has been added to the 2009 MLS All-Star Team, earning the honor for the sixth time in his career. Thornton was added to the squad as a replacement for Houston goalkeeper Pat Onstad, and will be on the All-Star Team roster for the match against England's Everton FC this Wednesday, July 29.
Thornton, 35, has been a standout in net for Chivas USA in 2009. Having played every minute of the MLS season for the Red-and-White, the Edgewood, Md. native has seven shutouts and a 0.88 goals against average in 17 games, and his eight wins and seven shutouts are second only to Onstad, who has played two more games. Thornton and Seattle Sounders FC's Kasey Keller are the two goalkeepers on the All-Star Team roster for the match against Everton.
A 13-year veteran of MLS, Thornton has earned many accolades, including being named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 1998, the year he helped the Chicago Fire to the MLS Cup and the U.S. Open Cup. He has five previous MLS All-Star nods (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003), and won two additional U.S. Open Cups with Chicago in 2000 and 2003, as well as the Supporters Shield with the Fire in 2003.
The 2009 MLS All-Star Game will be played on Wednesday, July 29 at Real Salt Lake's Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, when the MLS All-Stars play Everton FC of the English Premier League. The game will be televised live on ESPN2 and Galavision at 6:30 p.m. PT (7:30 p.m. MT). Chivas USA next plays on Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Colorado Rapids, and next has a home match on Saturday, Aug. 22 against the New York Red Bulls.
