Chinooks Bounce Back with Big Win
July 12, 2022 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Lakeshore Chinooks News Release
Mequon, Wis - It was quite the night for Chinooks hitters as they found a way to win big despite another rain delay putting a temporary hold on the game. The Mallards (2-4) were back in Mequon taking on the Chinooks (4-2) in game two of the series tonight with Mitch Alba facing off against Mitchell Leroy on the mound. Lakeshore was busy at the plate en route to a 12-2 victory over Madison which brought their second half record to 4-2.
Mitch Alba was solid tonight, going three innings and giving up only two runs while striking out two hitters.
The Chinooks got the ball rolling first, with big first and second innings to jump out to an early lead. The bottom of the first featured four runs scored by Lakeshore. Matthias Haas hit an RBI single to bring home Michael Seegers, putting the Chinooks up 1-0. Josh Johnson hit an RBI fielder's choice and Jack Firestone followed with a 2-RBI double to help Lakeshore finish the first inning up 4-0.
Lakeshore scored three more runs in the second inning. Matt Deprey emphasized his recent All Star selection with an RBI single, and Aiden Longwell got in on the action with his own 2-RBI double before the end of the inning. Lakeshore finished the second inning leading 7-0. Longwell was 3 for 4 at the plate tonight with four RBIs while also pitching a scoreless inning in the ninth as a dual threat for the Chinooks.
"I was seeing it good tonight, just trying to put good swings down" Longwell said. "Early in the count they were giving me some strikes to handle with and I took what they gave me shooting a couple balls the other way...and i was on time with their fastball today and was able to pull it down the line."
Marc Lidd (W, 1-0) came in to relive Alba and pitched three shutout innings. Lidd struck out two hitters and kept Madison in check after the two teams returned from the rain delay.
Lakeshore would tack on an additional five runs in the fourth and eighth innings. Steven Hrustich continued his hot night with an RBI fielders choice while Josh Johnson delivered with an RBI triple to help pad the lead. Hrustich and Johnson finished the night with three hits each and were big contributors in tonight's game.
The bottom of the eighth inning saw back-to-back RBI doubles from Johnson and Longwell to bring the Chinooks to a 12-2 lead heading into the ninth. Luke Llewellyn, Arthur Liebau, and Aiden Longwell combined to pitch three scoreless innings for Lakeshore to close out the game.
Coach Travis Akre has the Chinooks back on track as they head to Wisconsin Rapids to take on the division-leading Rafters in a two game series on the road.
"These are tough games because were able to jump on them early, but then we go through the rain delay which is a tough thing to work through. Credit to the guys, they stuck with it and went back to the locker room to reset, gather themselves, but came back on and were able to flip the switch and compete again" Akre said.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm tomorrow night at historic Witter Field in Wisconsin Rapids.
