Chiefs Score Season-High 13 Runs in Sunday Slugfest Win

Peoria, IL - The Chiefs notched a season-high 13 runs in their 13-8 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Sunday afternoon at Dozer Park.

The win clinched a series victory for Peoria and closed the season series against Wisconsin with the Chiefs winning 12 of the 21 matchups.

Osvaldo Tovalin led the charge for Peoria, driving in four runs. His three-run home run against Wisconsin reliever Nick Merkel broke a tie game and made it 10-7 Chiefs.

Tovalin went 2-for-4 with four RBI and finished the season series against Wisconsin with 19 RBi against the Timber Rattlers.

Peoria got out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning against Wisconsin starter Edwin Jimenez. A walk and a double set up a two-run triple from Tyler Reichenborn. Three pitches later, Reichenborn scored on a single by Alex Iadisernia.

Wisconsin responded with two runs in the third against Peoria starter Max Rajcic. Jheremy Vargas led off with a single and scored on a Robert Moore double. After Moore moved to third on a fly out, he scored on a Joe Gray Jr. ground out to make it a 3-2 game.

But the Peoria bats continued to stay hot in the home half of the third as Peoria opened the inning with five consecutive hits. A bunt single from Ramon Mendoza made it 4-2. A Tovalin single made it a three-run game. After a Jeremy Rivas single, Thomas Francisco and Reichenborn hit back-to-back SAC fly's to make it 7-2.

Jimenez was done after three innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits with three walks.

The Timber Rattlers began their climb to tie the game in the fourth. Ernesto Martinez led off with a solo home run to left, his third of the series which made it 7-3.

An inning later, Martinez was at the plate with two runners on base and two out. He singled to make it 7-4. Ben Metzinger followed with a two-run double to make it a 7-6 contest.

Metzinger and Martinez combined to drive in four runs in the contest.

Rajcic gave up a career-high six runs over 4 2/3 innings, giving up six hits while walking three and fanning four.

Wisconsin tied the game at seven in the sixth when Je'Von Ward led off with a solo home run off Edgar Manzo. Manzo threw 1 1/3 innings and was credited with the win.

After Tovalin gave Peoria a 10-7 lead, Joe Gray Jr. led off the seventh with a solo home run of his own against Jack Ralston, making it 10-8. Peoria got that run back in the home half of the seventh on a Nathan Church single, pushing the Chiefs lead to 11-8.

Peoria capped the scoring in the eighth when Ramon Mendoza launched a two-run home run to make it 13-8.

Mendoza went 3-for-5 with three RBI. Mendoza, Tovalin, and Reichenborn each put together multi-hit efforts as Peoria had 14 hits.

The Chiefs improve to 45-39 and 12-6 in the second half. Wisconsin falls to 35-47 and 9-9 in the latter half.

After an off day on Monday, the Chiefs will travel to Cedar Rapids on Tuesday to begin a six-game series against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
