Spokane Chiefs News Release

Typically a six-game WHL road trip will have a negative impact to stats and standings, but the Chiefs bucked the trend over the past nine days when they finished a six game swing through the East Division with a 3-2-1-0 record, earning seven points and putting themselves in a tie for third place in the U.S. Spokane began the trip in fifth place.

After returning to town on Sunday afternoon following a 3-1 win at Swift Current, Spokane will reward themselves with a day off on Monday before returning to the practice ice on Tuesday. The Chiefs will have three days to prepare themselves for a pair of home games this weekend when the Edmonton Oil Kings visit on Friday and Tri-City Americans on Saturday. Tickets for all home games are available by calling the Chiefs office at (509) 535-PUCK, TicketsWest at (800) 325-SEAT or by logging onto www.ticketswest.com.

The Chiefs are again locked in the toughest division in the league as the U.S. Division is the only one in the WHL to have five teams boast a winning percentage of at least .500. Just one point separates third and fifth. Seattle and Spokane have 17 points and Everett trails with 16 points. Knowing the competitive nature of their four division opponents, any movement up the standings will be tough to come by.

Spokane began their steady improvement 10 games ago. Through the first seven the Chiefs had a 2-5 record and were outscored 3.86-2.86. Since, Spokane has won six times and outscored the opposition 4.30-2.40. James Reid has dropped his goals against from 3.78 to 2.81 and raised his save percentage from .865 to .896. In five games on the trip, Reid had a 1.99 GAA and .928 save percentage.

Fellow 20-year-olds Levko Koper and Tyler Johnson led the Chiefs in scoring on the trip with 10 and seven points respectively. Johnson and Jared Cowen, who had two goals and four points in the six games, led the Chiefs at +7. Cowen has cracked the league's top-10 in plus-minus at +11, ninth in the WHL. Brenden Kichton, who has a point in eight of the 10 games he has played, is tied for 16th with +9. He has registered scored three goals and 13 points, third on the club in scoring.
