Spokane Chiefs News Release

Vancouver, B.C. - The Spokane Chiefs rallied behind five straight goals to beat the Vancouver Giants 5-3 on Saturday night, bringing themselves to a tie with the Prince George Cougars for the eighth seed in the playoff push (47 points each).

The Giants controlled the first period, with Jaden Lipinski scoring back-to-back goals at 10:33 and 12:34 to give Vancouver a 2-0 advantage heading into the first break.

But from there, it was all Chiefs starting with Chase Bertholet at 6:45 in the second period when he charged down the slot and slapped the puck by Vancouver netminder Connor Martin to get Spokane on the board. Number one overall draft pick Berkly Catton notched his first WHL career point on the play with an assist.

With just over two minutes left in the middle frame, rookie winger Ty Cheveldayoff claimed a loose puck at the blue line and fired it into the twine from the right circle to tie things up at 2-2 to end the period. Blake Swetlikoff earned an assist on the play.

The Chiefs picked up right where they left off in the third period, as veteran forward Nick McCarry danced his way through defenders straight up the middle and followed through to give Spokane a 3-2 lead four minutes into the frame.

With three minutes left to play, Cheveldayoff stole a pass away and took it right back to the net, burying it for his second goal of the game and his ninth of the season.

Defenseman Graham Sward sealed the deal with an empty netter at 19:40 to cap the scoring at 5-2.

Mason Beaupit earned himself third star honors with his 35 saves, marking his second win in as many games. On the other end, Connor Martin turned aside 40-of-44 Spokane shots. The Chiefs outshot the Giants 44-37.

Spokane's power play was quiet compared to Friday night's contest, going 1-for-6 on the man advantage and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Up next, the Chiefs will take on the same Vancouver Giants Sunday evening at 4:00 p.m. before heading back to Spokane Arena for their final regular season home game Wednesday.
