Dureau's Hat Trick Caps off Thrilling Hawks Win
April 3, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
Jaydon Dureau posted his third hat trick of the season as the Winterhawks held off the Thunderbirds' comeback bid to take a 5-4 victory at the VMC on Saturday.
It was all Portland to start this one, with the hosts racing out to a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes. Dureau got the party started at 6:53 with a shorthanded breakaway beauty, followed two minutes later by Gabe Klassen's 32nd goal of the year on a deflected Clay Hanus shot.
The Winterhawks continued to dominate early in the middle frame as Dureau netted another on a breakaway and Josh Mori nudged a puck home for a 4-0 Hawks lead, but Seattle built a response soon after. Conner Roulette, Sam Popowich and Samuel Knazko each found twine in a four-minute span to get their club within a goal heading into the final frame, and Henrik Rybinski capped off the comeback with a power-play strike midway through the third.
Not to be outdone, Dureau came up clutch again for the Hawks as he completed his hat trick and netted the game-winner just over a minute later. With Portland on the man-advantage, Dureau played a give-and-go sequence with Cross Hanas down the left-wing side before rifling a one-timer through the five-hole of Thomas Milic.
Taylor Gauthier stopped 29 of 33 shots in his team's victory and has won five of his last six starts for the team.
The Winterhawks next head north of the border to take on the Vancouver Giants at 7:30 P.M. on April 8.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:
"We don't quit. You look at these scores where we could blow a lead or we could push back, it doesn't matter. As long as there's time on the clock, we're gonna work our hardest. No one has any quit on our team, we've got resilience. Everything you saw tonight - that's our team. That's our mentality."
