
Chiefs Lose Home Finale 5-4 to Clinton

Peoria, IL -The Peoria Chiefs fell to Clinton 5-4 in their final home game of the season on Thursday night in front of 4,092 fans, bringing the season record attendance to 275,673. With the night's loss, the Chiefs are now 28-37 in the second half and 58-76 on the season. A home run courtesy of Dylan Johnston put the Chiefs on the board in the second inning. With two outs, Brandon Guyer reached on a base hit off LumberKings starter Tim Murphy. Johnston then hit his 13th homer of the year, a two-run shot to right field, to give the Chiefs the lead over Clinton 2-0. Clinton stole the lead away from the Chiefs with a three-run fourth inning off starter Jose Pina. Back-to-back doubles by Tim Smith and Mitch Moreland led off the inning before Justin Smoak flew out to center for the first out. Jonathan Greene drove home both Smith and Moreland with a double to right field, tying the game at 2-2. With Miguel Alfonso at the plate, a wild pitch by Pina advanced Greene to third. Alfonso hit a ground ball to second base, allowing Greene to score as he was thrown out, putting the LumberKings up 3-2. The Chiefs caught the LumberKings in the sixth as they tied the game 3-3. With one out, Jovan Rosa tripled to the center field wall, and Luis Bautista drove Rosa home with a sacrifice fly. The team left a runner at third as a walk, a passed ball, and a wild pitch by reliever Julio Santana moved Rebel Ridling to third before Guyer had a foul fly out to third base. With Zach Ashwood coming in for Cubs rehabber Jon Lieber at the top of the seventh, his first pitch to Greene was blasted to center field for a solo home run, giving Clinton a 4-3 lead over the Chiefs. To lead off their half of the eighth, Josh Harrison tied the game for the Chiefs with a home run off reliever Adalberto Flores. His solo shot was his first with the Chiefs the season and the second of his career as he tied the teams at 4-4 heading into the ninth. The back-and-forth match went back to a LumberKings lead in the ninth. Moreland began the inning with a single off Ashwood, followed by a double from Smoak to put runners at second and third. Greene flew out for the first out, and the Chiefs intentionally walked Alfonso to load the bases. Carlos Dominguez grounded into a force out as Alfonso was thrown out at second, but Moreland came home to score, breaking the tie and putting Clinton up 5-4. Pina threw the first four innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out three batters without issuing a walk. Lieber threw two scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and not walking or striking out any batters. Ashwood pitched the final three innings, during which he gave up two earned runs on three hits while walking one and striking out one.
Player of the Game -Dylan Johnston (DH) - Johnston was one-for-two on the night with one run and two RBI. His two-run homer in the second was his 13th of the season and gave the Chiefs two of their four runs of the game.
Notes... The Chiefs are 6-1 in regular season home finales at O'Brien Field...After hitting his first six home runs on the road, Johnston's last five have come while at home...Ashwood tied the single-season home run record, shared by four others, with 17 allowed...He is also tied for the league lead in home runs allowed...Chiefs pitchers have now issued just three intentional walks on the season...The record low of four was set in 2001...The Chiefs have lost five of the last six games at O'Brien Field by one run...The Chiefs have lost five straight for the third time in the second half...With the loss, the Chiefs have the worst record in O'Brien Field history at 32-37...The team was 33-36 in 2005...Rosa has 54 extra-base hits, which puts him at second in the league...With today's loss, Ashwood is now the 34th ten-game loser in Chiefs history...The Chiefs will head out for their final road trip of the season tomorrow as they travel to Kane County to take on the Cougars at 6:30 PM...The Chiefs will start LH Chris Siegfried (5-6, 6.14) while Kane County will counter with RH Tyson Ross (0-1, 5.02)...The game can be heard live beginning with the pre-game show at 6:15 PM online at www.peoriachiefs.com or on WOAM 1350.
