Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Cincinnati, OH - The Johnstown Chiefs snagged the early lead in Game 1 against Cincinnati, but couldn't add to it as the Cyclones took the first game 5-2.
For the third straight game in the Kelly Cup Playoffs the Chiefs struck less than a minute into the first period to take a 1-0 lead.
After Alex Imbeault hit Ryan Garlock with a lead pass on the left wing, Garlock slid it to Randy Rowe all alone in front of Maxime Daigneault. Rowe used a deke to his backhand to get around the Cincinnati netminder before sliding it home for his third goal of the playoffs just 40 seconds into the game. The Cyclones came back with goals from David Desharnais (1st, 7:59) and Scott Reynolds (1st, 10:06) to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Johnstown had all of the opportunities to even the score in the second period, but were unable to cash in on five power play attempts including 55 seconds of a 5-on-3 advantage. The Cyclones were able to extend the lead on an unassisted goal by Thomas Beauregard (1st, 18:06) to take a 3-1 lead after two.
The Cyclones made sure to protect their two-goal lead in the third by limiting the Chiefs to just four shots. The fourth found the back of the net as Ray Macias fed a pass from the right wing boards across to Garlock who tipped it by Daigneault at 17:37 of the third. That goal came just a bit too late, though, as goals by Mathieu Aubin (1st, 10:50) and Beauregard (2nd, 12:07) padded Cincinnati's lead to 5-1.
Ryan Nie took the first loss of the series making 17 saves on 22 chances. The Chiefs' power play was held without a goal for the first time in the playoffs going 0-for-7.
