Peoria, IL -The Peoria Chiefs dropped the middle game of a three-game series with the visiting West Michigan Whitecaps 5-1 on Tuesday night at O'Brien Field. The loss drops the Chiefs to 5-8 on the year and snaps a four-game losing streak for West Michigan.
Peoria jumped out in front of the Whitecaps for the second consecutive game in the series without the benefit of a hit. Cliff Andersen led the game off by reaching on an error by the shortstop, and Marwin Gonzalez drew a walk from Alfredo Figaro. Josh Donaldson drew the second straight walk to load the bases with one out. Blake Lalli hit a ball hard at the third basemen which was not fielded cleanly and allowed Andersen to score, making it 1-0. Figaro recovered to strike out Jovan Rosa to end the inning.
The Whitecaps answered back in the second as Jordan Newton had the first hit of the game off Chris Siegfried, a single out to right center. Joe Tucker followed with a hit of his own to right center, and Audy Ciriaco continued the rally with a triple to bring home Newton and Tucker and give the Whitecaps a 2-1 lead.
Three up and three down for Peoria brought the Whitecaps back to the plate, and after being walked by Siegfried, Casper Wells stole second and was driven home on a single from Chris Carlson to extend the Caps lead to 3-1.
West Michigan got to Siegfried again in the fifth inning. Roger Tomas led off with a solo home run to left field that pushed the lead to 4-1. Kyle Peter drew a walk and moved to second on a ground out before stealing third base. Chris Carlson reached on an infield single that allowed Peter to score and make it a 5-1 game.
Siegfried suffered his first career loss as a starter. The lefty allowed five runs and seven hits over five innings while striking out one. Hung-Wen Chen tossed three scoreless innings of relief while allowing four hits and striking out one. Blake Parker threw a scoreless ninth inning of relief while striking out two.
Player of the Game -Blake Lalli (C)-Blake Lalli went 1-for-4 in the game with a double and drove in the only Chiefs run. Lalli also threw out his first runner of the season behind the plate in the ninth inning. Blake has now hit safely in four straight games.
Notes... The Chiefs scored first for just the fifth time this season...The run allowed by Siegfried in the second was the first allowed by a regular Chiefs pitcher in 24 1/3 innings... Peoria has gone two straight games without committing an error for the first time this season...Lalli leads the team with seven RBI on the season...The Chiefs have 12 stolen bases through the first nine games of the homestand...Figaro is the first pitcher to go seven innings in a Chiefs game this season...The Chiefs are 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position...The series and 10-game homestand wrap up on Wednesday at 6:30 PM...Peoria will send RH Alberto Cabrera (1-1, 5.19) to the mound against RH Paul Nardozzi (1-0, 0.00)...The game can be heard live beginning with the pre-game show at 6:15 PM online at www.peoriachiefs.com or on WOAM 1350.
