Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - For the third straight game, the Peoria Chiefs fell to the Fort Wayne Wizards, this time 6-2 Monday night at O'Brien Field. As a result, the Chiefs won just one game out of five against the Wizards and finished up the homestand going 3-6. Peoria will travel to Burlington for a four-game set starting Tuesday night. With the Chiefs leading 2-1 in the fourth, Fort Wayne took the lead for good. Seth Johnston scored on a RBI single by Will Venable off of Donnie Veal. Daryl Jones' followed with a two-out double to deep left field to make it 3-2 ballgame.
The Wizards tacked on a run for the third straight inning in the top when Nic Crosta continued his hot-hitting notching an RBI single to bring in Sansoe.
Fort Wayne added two runs of insurance in the top of the ninth on two solo homers off of reliever Jeff Teasley. Nick Hundley, in his first game off of the disabled list, ripped a shot into the lawn in left. After a Rayner Contreras groundout, Jesus Lopez hit a rare inside-the-park homer to centerfield. Yusuf Carter, just added to the roster today, put his hands up signaling for a ground rule double as the ball appeared to have gotten stuck underneath the wall, but Lopez never stopped running and was awarded a round tripper.
After being held scoreless for 24 consecutive innings, the Chiefs offense finally broke through. In the bottom of the second with one away, Kyle Reynolds tripled into right-center field. One batter later, Matt Ciaramella came through with a two-out RBI double off the wall in right, narrowly missing a home run but scoring Reynolds from third. The next batter was Jake Muyco and he made it a 2-0 lead when he delivered a line drive single to right.
The Wizards cut the 2-0 deficit in half in the third. Hundley singled off of Veal, his former college teammate at University of Arizona, and later came in to score on Mike Sansoe's two-out RBI single.
Veal went six innings giving up four runs, three earned on eight hits while striking out six in a losing effort. Jesse Estrada pitched two scoreless frames and Teasley gave up two runs in his inning of work. Grant Varnell improved his record to 2-5 with a win, tossing five innings allowing two runs on six hits.
Pepsi Player of the Game
Dylan Johnston (SS) - The Chiefs' shortstop was 3-4 on the night. The three hits was a season high for Johnston. He was the only Chief with more than one hit.
