South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, Ind . - Three fourth inning runs propelled the South Bend SilverHawks to a 5-1 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts Monday night at Coveleski Stadium. The win gave the SilverHawks a 3-1 series win over Lansing.
South Bend (28-27) snatched the lead from the Lugnuts in the third inning with four singles. Bryan Byrne and Trey Hendricks each singled to put runners at first and third with two men out. Will Crouch brought Byrne home when he singled to center field to tie the game at 1-1. Orlando Mercado walked to load the bases for Steve Mena, who blooped a single into right-center field that plated both Hendricks and Crouch to give the SilverHawks a 3-1 lead.
After plating another run in the sixth, South Bend put one more on the board in the eighth when Mena blasted a homer to left-center field to push the lead to 5-1.
Lansing's only run of the game came in the first inning when Anthony Hatch smacked his sixth home run of the season, a laser that cleared the right field wall to give the Lugnuts a 1-0 lead.
The Lugnuts went the final four innings without a hit as two pitchers combined to hold Lansing to just four knocks in the game. Kyle Wright picked up the win by hurling seven innings and allowing just one run while fanning seven. Kyler Newby notched the save by tossing a scoreless eighth and ninth for South Bend.
Chi-Hung Cheng took the loss for Lansing, throwing 5 1/3 innings and giving up four runs on six hits.
Lansing (34-22) will return home on Tuesday night to open an eight game homestand against the Dayton Dragons. Kristian Bell (3-3, 4.17) will hurl for the Lugnuts, while Travis Wood (5-0, 3.38) will take the hill for the Dragons. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at Oldsmobile Park.
