South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Bend - During the month of May, the South Bend Silver Hawks began to warm up. Monday night, two players from warm weather cities were hot for the Silver Hawks. Steve Mena, (Miami, FL) drove in three runs including his first home run of the campaign and Kyle Wright (Houston, TX), who got the start because of several rainouts last week, fanned a season high seven batters in the Hawks 5-1 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (34-22)
Like Sunday's contest, the visitors scored first. Anthony Hatch opened the scoring by crushing his sixth home run of the campaign over the right field wall off Hawks starter Kyle Wright pushing Lansing TO a 1-0 lead.
After the home run, both Wright and Lansing starting pitcher Chi-Hung Cheng threw wonderfully. Both retired consecutive batters from the first to the fourth innings. Wright retired nine consecutive Lugnuts, while Cheng erased 11 straight Silver Hawks.
However, the Hawks broke through in the fifth. With two out, Bryan Byrne singled to right and moved to third on a Trey Hendricks base hit to left-center. Will Crouch's single to center plated Byrne and moved Hendricks 90 feet to second. Orlando Mercado's walk loaded the bases and Steve Mena's single to left-center scored two more and advanced the Hawks lead to 3-1.
South Bend scored a solo run in the sixth inning and Mena drilled his home run in the eighth to give the Hawks their 5-1 advantage.
Hawks starter Kyle Wright (3-0) gets the win and Chi-Hung Cheng (5-4) suffers the loss.
The Silver Hawks (28-27) continue their eight game homestand with a four game set Tuesday night with first pitch at 7:00 PM and gates opening at 6:00 PM.
