
Chiefs Drop Series Finale 7-5

Columbus, Ohio - In the final game of an eight game road trip the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost 7-5 to the Columbus Clippers on Tuesday afternoon. Columbus broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning when Shelley Duncan hit a three run home run off of Chiefs reliever Ron Villone. Joe Smith (1-1) picked up the win for the Clippers and Villone (0-1) was the losing pitcher for Syracuse. Saul Rivera recorded his fourth save of the year.
Syracuse (15-11) scored first in the game getting a run off of Clippers starter Mike Gosling in the first inning. Pete Orr hit a one out triple and was knocked in by Mike Morse. However, Columbus (16-10) answered back in the bottom half of the inning.
Chiefs starter Chuck James allowed two two-run home runs to Shelley Duncan and Chris Gimenez within a four batter span in the bottom of the first inning. All of the runs came with two outs.
Syracuse scored again in the second inning on a fielders choice groundout by Mike Morse which plated Seth Bynum. The Chiefs rallied back in the sixth to tie the game with two more runs. Mike Morse and Josh Whitesell both reached base to start the inning. Chase Lambin recorded a base hit to score Morse, and Chris Duncan singled to score Whitesell. After six, the game was tied at 4.
With one out in the seventh inning and two runners on base, Shelley Duncan hit a three run home run to put the Clippers up for good. Syracuse scored one more run in the eighth with a leadoff solo home run off the bat of Josh Whitesell.
The Chiefs went down in order in the ninth to end the game and the road trip. Columbus took the series three games to one and Syracuse finished their eight game road trip with three runs and five losses.
Syracuse will have Wednesday off before returning home to face the Gwinnett Braves in a four game series starting on Thursday night. First pitch at Alliance Bank Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
