International League Establishes New Annual Award

Published on May 4, 2010 under International League (IL1) News Release

International League ballparks are an integral part of their team's communities, and each season thousands of individuals dedicate themselves on a nightly basis to helping fans have the most enjoyable experience possible. Many are in highly visible roles, such as ushers and parking attendants offering fans an accommodating attitude and welcoming smile. Others, such as those operating the scoreboard or preparing the concessions, make their contributions behind the scenes. Public address and radio announcers also develop a special relationship with fans. Their voices are immediately identifiable to fans, even if their faces aren't.

Whatever part they play, each of these individuals work tirelessly to enhance the fan experience and significantly contribute to the overall success of the production that is today's Minor League Baseball game.

In recognition of the essential role these individuals play in the daily operations of International League teams the League is introducing its Spirit of the International League Award.

In making the announcement International League president Randy Mobley said, "During a baseball game these days there are many, many individuals in and around our ballparks who impact the fan experience. Some are visible and others are not so visible, but each and every one of them is vital to the success of the operation of their team and this League. With the creation of this award we will look forward to annually recognizing an individual who has clearly demonstrated a fan-centered approach on a daily basis."

Beginning in 2011 each International League team will have the opportunity to nominate one individual from within its organization who has in some way contributed to "enhancing the fan experience" through their dedicated service to the team. From the nominees a single recipient will be selected by the International League who will then be formally recognized and presented with the Spirit of the International League Award.

The first recipient of the Spirit of the International League Award is longtime Toledo Mud Hens radio broadcaster Frank Gilhooley. Son of International League Hall of Famer Frank Gilhooley Sr., Frank is in his 24th season of describing action on the field with his Mud Hens broadcast partner Jim Weber.

"Frank epitomizes exactly what we had in mind when establishing the Spirit of the International League Award," said Randy Mobley. "With his humble and pleasant approach Frank is an extended member of the family for Mud Hens fans listening on the radio and I look forward to presenting him with this first annual award on what has been declared `Frank Gilhooley Day' at Fifth Third Field." The Mud Hens will host the Indianapolis Indians on Sunday, May 16 with "Frank Gilhooley Day" ceremonies to begin at 1:30 p.m. and the first pitch set for 2:00 p.m.
