Chiefs Drop Banners, Tri-City

The Spokane Chiefs celebrated their Memorial Cup Championship on Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd of 10,538 in their home opener and earned a 3- 0 win over the Tri-City Americans. In a special pre- game ceremony, the organization dropped banners recognizing their two WHL and Memorial Cup titles and looked back to last year with video tributes.

After the pomp and circumstance, the Chiefs earned their second straight shutout and Dustin Tokarski's 10th career tying him for first on the franchise list in that category. The 19-year-old stopped stop 31 shots, including 11 in the first.

A scoreless first was followed by two goals in each of the second and third period. Mitch Wahl's second of the season came on a slap shot from the left point at 16:16 of the second with Brett Bartman and Stefan Ulmer assisting.

The Chiefs second was scored by Mike Reddington, the 18-year-old defenseman who is in his third year in Spokane. After serving a two minute penalty for boarding, Reddington came out of the box, took a Justin McCrae feed, broke in on Chet Pickard and went stick side for his first of the year. Spokane had just four shots in the second.

In the third, Levko Koper slid in a rebound of a Jared Spurgeon shot at 4:43 to push the lead to three goals. Seth Compton's shorthanded, empty net goal at 18:02 iced the game.

Spokane was 0-3 on the power play, 5-5 on the penalty kill and had 19 shots on goal.

The Chiefs will play four games in five nights, three on the road, next week beginning on Tuesday night at Kamloops at 7:00. Mike Boyle with have Comcast Hockey Tonight at 6:30 on 1510 KGA.

Friday night, Spokane will host the Everett Silvertips for the first time this season on the Magnet Schedule Giveaway presented by the Black Book by Hagadone Directories.
