Chilliwack Bruins News Release
Brian Matte was the overtime hero as the Prince George Cougars (3-1-0-0) defeated the Chilliwack Bruins (1-0-1-0) 3-2 in extra time Saturday night in Chilliwack.
The Bruins outshot the Cougars 41-31. Cougars' goaltender Kevin Armstrong made 39 saves and was named the game's first star.
The Bruins opened the scoring on Chris Van Duynhoven's first of the season at the 4:58 mark of the second period but the lead was short lived as Marek Viedensky capitalized on a Bruins miscue just 26 seconds later. After a defensive miscue by the Bruins behind their own net, Viedensky was able to tap the puck into a wide open Bruins net. Cameron Cepek gave the visitors a 2-1 lead with just under six minutes left in the second stanza on the powerplay when his point shot deflected off a Bruins defender behind goaltender Lucas Gore.
Brandon Manning's second of the season on the powerplay brought the Bruins even just over eight minutes into the third setting the stage for Matte's overtime heroics.
Chilliwack was 1/8 on the powerplay, the Cougars were 1/4.
The Bruins are back in action Sunday when they host the Vancouver Giants. Game time is 5pm.
