Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants are two for two on this three games in three nights weekend. After posting an impressive 7-3 victory over Prince George in the Giants home opener on Friday night, the Giants continued their winning ways with a 5-0 shutout victory over the Portland Winter Hawks on Saturday night.
Mike Piluso led the way for the Giants, scoring two goals on the evening, giving him three goals on the season. Other Giants goals were scored by Adam Basford, with his first in the WHL, Brendan Gallagher with his second goal in as many games, and Lance Bouma with his second of the campaign. Jamie Tucker turned aside 19 shots for his second shutout of this young season. While the Winter Hawks only mustered 19 shots on goal, many were high quality chances and Tucker had to be sharp.
The Giants held leads of 1-0 after one period (Basford) and 2-0 after two (Piluso's 1st),. After holding off the Hawks on some key power plays in the third period, the Giants were able to reel of three goals in the final 1:24 of the game. Piluso's second marker salted the game away at 18:48. Brendan Gallagher scored a highlight reel goal at 19:16, then Lance Bouma converted a Craig Cunningham pass at 19:52 to round out the scoring.
Three Stars:
1) Mike Piluso - two goals
2) Jamie Tucker - 19 saves and a shutout
3) Brett Ponich - Portland defender.
Next up for the Giants will be the weekend finale against the Chilliwack Bruins. You can catch all the action on SUPERHITS 650 CISL at 430 pm, with the drop of the puck at 5 pm from Prospera Centre in Chilliwack.
