Gustav Engman's backhand goal 57-seconds into the third period gave broke a 2-2 tie and lifted the Chiefs to a 4-2 win over the Kamloops Blazers on Saturday night in the Spokane Arena. The Chiefs upped their record to 17-22-8-1 and pushed Spokane into fourth place in the US Division with 43 points, one more than Tri-City who lost in overtime at Portland.
Chiefs fans helped raise $12,800 for the Spokane Chiefs Continuing Education Scholarship Fund during the Comcast Jersey off the Back Auction.
Spokane scored first as Kyle Howarth tallied his fifth goal in his last four games with an unassisted snap shot at 6:44 of the first period.
After Spokane outshot Kamloops 11-0 to start the game, the Blazers scored on their third shot with a power play goal at 8:45. In the first period, Spokane outshot the Blazers 15-8 in the opening period.
Kamloops would take a 2-1 lead at 6:40 of the second with another power play goal, but Jeff Lynch answered for Spokane at 8:16. Lynch tipped in a rebound of a Chad Klassen shot. Howarth had the second assist for a two point night.
In the third, Engman's seventh goal of the season acted as the game winner. Adam Hobson and Ned Lukacevic had the assist.
Lukacevic finished the scoring at 13:22 from Hobson and Dan Mercer for the final score.
Jim Watt stopped 23 Kamloops shots for his 15th win of the season.
The Chiefs will travel to Kamloops on Tuesday night to finish the second half of a home-and-home series at 7:00. Mike Boyle will go on the air at 6:30 with Comcast Hockey Tonight on 790 the Fan. Spokane will travel to Seattle on Wednesday to play the Thunderbirds for the second time in a week.
The Chiefs next home game will be Friday, February 4th as they host the Everett Silvertips on 70's Night. February 5th Spokane will take on Tri-City in the Spokane Arena on Buck Night presented by Red Lion and West Coast Hotels and Star @ 96.9.
