The WHEAT KINGS will be hoping to salvage the fourth and final game of their Alberta road swing Sunday afternoon when they face off against the HITMEN at CALGARY'S PENGROWTH SADDLEDOME.Today's game will be the first of three between these two teams this week.BRANDON will host the HITMEN Wednesday night at WINNIPEG'S new MTS Centre before closing out the week on Friday night at the Keystone Centre.The WHEAT KINGS enter Sunday's game riding a 3-game losing streak, having lost all three starts on this week's tour (5-1 in MEDICINE HAT on Tuesday; 8-2 in LETHBRIDGE on Wednesday; 5-1 to the REBELS in RED DEER on Friday night).Before heading out west, the WHEATS had won two of a 3-game home stand including victories over the top two teams in the Eastern Conference - LETHBRIDGE and SASKATOON.BRANDON is currently 24-18-5-1 on the season.Thanks to back to back wins this weekend by SASKATOON and BRANDON'S lack of success on the road, the WHEAT KINGS find themselves thirteen points behind the Eastern Division leading BLADES - and only eight up on third place PRINCE ALBERT.BRANDON is 5-5-0 in it's last ten games.At home, the WHEATS are 15-6-1-1 while on the road, they're 9-12-4.In overtime, BRANDON is 6-1-5 and share the best overtime winning percentage in the WHL with the VANCOUVER GIANTS (.750).Today's game is the second meeting of the season between these two clubs.CALGARY scored two third period goals on November 5th to earn a 5-5 overtime tie with the visiting WHEAT KINGS.
ROAD WOES: During the first three games of this weeklong trip, the WHEAT KINGS have been outscored to the tune of 18-4.BRANDON'S last road win came on January 16th when the WHEAT KINGS came from behind to beat PRINCE ALBERT in overtime.BRANDON has lost six of it's last eight road games.
FEHR SLIPS IN SCORING RACE: WASHINGTON CAPITALS' first round draft choice ERIC FEHR has slipped into second place in the WHL scoring race.Entering today's game vs. CALGARY, the Winkler Manitoba product has 65 points - one less than GILBERT BRULE of the GIANTS.FEHR had BRANDON'S lone goal in Friday's 5-1 loss to the REBELS - his league leading 41st of the year.He's managed to score twenty-two goals and 38 points in his last 27 games and is on pace to reach the 50-goal plateau for the second straight season. The last WHEAT KING to do that was KELLY GLOWA, who scored 59 in '81-82 before firing 71 goals the following year.
OTHER LEAGUE LEADERS: Two other WHEAT KING veterans - RYAN STONE (18-41-59) and TIM KONSORADA (17-37-54) are fifth and 12yh respectively in the league scoring race.Former MJHL all star STEVEN LATER is fourth in scoring among defenceman with 39 points.TYLER PLANTE leads all WHL rookie 'tenders with three shutouts and a .901 save percentage. However, the former AAA midget has slipped behind VANCOUVER'S MAREK SCHWARZ for the league lead in goals against average among freshmen.
MILESTONES: PHOENIX COYOTES' draft pick LANCE MONYCH has moved to within five games of becoming only the sixth WHEAT KING to play in 300 career games for BRANDON. Current assistant coach DWAYNE GYLYWOYCHUK is the franchise leader with 323.Having played 288 career games, captain TIM KONSORADA has moved past KELLY SMART and into sole possession of eighth place on the club's all time list.Right-winger ERIC FEHR, who recently played in his 250th career WHL game, tied the WHL record set by former REGINA PAT FRANK KOVACS in 1990-91 with four overtime game winning goals earlier this month.Finnish forward SAMI SANDELL notched his first ever WHL goal in Wednesday's loss to the HURRICANES.
DID YOU KNOW: BRANDON'S powerplay continues to lead the WHL (22.5%).ERIC FEHR leads the WHL with 20 powerplay tallies.Penalty killing, the WHEAT KINGS have slipped to 12th in the league with an 82.8% efficiency.WHEAT KINGS have announced plans to honour eight MANITOB BISON WHL grads including REAGAN LESLIE and TRAVIS EAGLES before Wednesday's game at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg...WHEAT KINGS attracted over 10,200 fans during their recent 3-game home stand.
