Chiefs Come Back to Claim Point in OT Loss to Americans
December 31, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
Kennewick, Washington - The Spokane Chiefs saw their rally fall short on Tuesday night as they overcame a two goal deficit to force overtime, but eventually lost to the Tri-City Americans 5-4.
After tilting the ice in their favor for much of the first period, a trio of turnovers lead to goals for the Americans--including a pair of short-handed goals just 70 seconds apart--as they jumped out to a 3-1 lead through the first 20 minutes of action. Leif Mattson extended his point streak to seven games with an assist on a Luke Toporowski goal at 13:26.
The Chiefs cut the deficit in the second period as Minnesota Wild prospect Adam Beckman extended his goal streak to nine games, tying a franchise record.
Spokane saw the Tri-City lead extend back to two 4:05 into the third period, but the Chiefs continued to fight their way back, pulling within one at 4:45 on a goal by Bear Hughes. An assist by Eli Zummack on the Hughes goal extended Zummack's point streak to 13 games. A second goal scored by Toporowski at the 12:05 mark of the frame tied things and eventually forced the game to overtime.
The Americans managed to put the stamp on the win just 1:16 into the overtime period with a goal by Marc Lajoie. Box Score: SPO (4) at T.C. (5) OT
Making his second career WHL start, Chiefs goaltender Mason Beaupit stopped 18-of-23 while Beck Warm was 25-of-29 for the Americans. Spokane ended the night 0-for-4 on the power play and Tri-City was 0-for-2.
