Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - In what was their final home game of 2019, the Brandon Wheat Kings snapped a mini 2-game skid with a 4-1 victory over the visiting Regina Pats Monday night at Westoba Place.
Ben McCartney scored once and set up two others while Jiri Patera turned aisde 34 shots as the Wheat Kings improved to 16-17-1-2 on the season.
Ridley Greig in the second and goals by Ty Thorpe and Luka Burzan 57 seconds apart early in the third period was enough for the Wheat Kings, who close out a busy 4-game in five night stretch New Year's Eve in Moose Jaw.
The Wheat Kings led 1-0 and 2-0 at the period breaks tonight, before the Pats finally got on the board on an unassisted effort by Cole Dubinsky two minutes into the third period.
However, the Wheat Kings wouldn't be denied in this one, scoring back to back goals to put this game out of reach.
While McCartney turned in a first star performance, it was Patera who was brilliant at times. The 20-year old Vegas Golden Knights prospect made 25 saves through the final two periods of play.
Brandon played this game without Cole Reinhardt (upper body) and defenceman Dom Schmeimann (flu). 16-year old forward Brett Hyland meanwhile made his WHL debut tonight and saw regular duty for most of the night. The Edmonton product was Brandon's second round selection in the 2018 Bantam Draft.
Regina was assessed nine of fifteen minor penalties in the game, with the Wheat Kings coming up empty on eight powerplay chances. Regina was 0 for 3.
The loss for the Pats was their first regulation loss in their last five games.
Following Tuesday's game in Moose Jaw, Brandon will return home to host the Eastern Division leading Prince Albert Raiders on Friday night.
This Friday is Home Depot Family Skate Night, presented by 91.5 Q Country and 94.7 Star FM.
Fans are encouraged to bring their skates and helmets to the game and join the Wheat Kings for a "free" public skate following the game.
Tickets to Friday's game are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
