Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs picked up a win in the front end of a Friday-Saturday doubleheader with the Vancouver Giants on Friday night at Spokane Arena, pulling away in the third period, 3-1.
After a scoreless first period, the Chiefs struck first just under six minutes into the second when Ty Smith -- making his return from a gold medal-winning experience at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship -- fired a shot on net that was deflected in the high slot by Michael King to give Spokane the 1-0 lead. Vancouver's Tristen Nielsen answered with the game-tying goal at 8:24 to send things into the second intermission knotted at 1-1.
Eli Zummack reclaimed the lead for the Chiefs at 7:38 of the third, extending his point streak to a league-best 16 games with a tap-in score after a wild flurry in front of Giants goalie David Tendeck. Rookie defenseman Mac Gross earned his first career WHL point with an assist.
The Chiefs added insurance at 13:40 as 2020 NHL draft prospect Jack Finley swooped in on a loose puck before chipping his 10th of the season over Tendeck's right shoulder.
And that'll do it for another Chiefs victory!
Los Angeles Kings prospect Lukas Parik was awarded the game's first star after saving 41 of 42 shots in net for Spokane. Tendeck ended the night 24-of-27. Neither side had a power play opportunity.
