Saskatoon, S.K. - The Spokane Chiefs put up a fight in the third, but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Saskatoon Blades 8-5 Friday night.

The Blades controlled the game for the first two periods of play, tacking on two unanswered goals in the first (Trevor Wong at 2:31 and Brandon Lisowsky at 14:17) and another in the second (Lisowsky at 5:39) to put Saskatoon up by three going into the final frame.

The Chiefs got themselves into the action when a Berkly Catton shot would find a rushing Chase Bertholet netfront to chip the puck into the net at 3:27 to make it 3-1. Ty Cheveldayoff also notched an assist on the play, extending his point streak to five games (5A).

Soon after, Tommaso De Luca deflected a rocket fired by Cade Hayes from the right circle top shelf to bring the Chiefs within one.

The gap wasn't closed for very long, though, as the Blades tacked on two more in the next minute and a half (Blake Gustafson at 6:15 and Aidan De La Gorgendiere at 7:00).

But Spokane wasn't going down without a fight. At 9:03, defenseman Brayden Crampton found the twine for the first time this season with help from Bertholet and Catton.

Then, at 11:35, Catton shaved the lead to 5-4 as he rifled the puck into the top left corner from one knee. The goal marked the Saskatoon native's third point of the period. De Luca and Cheveldayoff earned the assists - each finishing with two-point nights.

Again, Saskatoon managed to pull away with back-to-back goals by Justin Lies at 15:10 and Lisowsky - his third of the night - at 15:25 to give them another three-goal advantage at 7-4.

Bertholet was able to get yet another Spokane goal on the board unassisted at 16:39, but it wasn't enough as the Blades knocked in an empty netter at 18:16 to seal the deal. Bertholet's goal was his 13th of the season, a new team leader.

Spokane special teams continue to improve on the ice, going 2-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill tonight.

Dawson Cowan got the start in net for Spokane, turning away 16-of-23.

Up next, the Chiefs will wrap up the first half of the season as they close their long road trip against the Prince Albert Raiders Saturday night. Spokane's next game after the holiday break will be the Battle of the Sound game against the Seattle Thunderbirds at Climate Pledge Arena on Tuesday, December 27. Tickets for that game can be bought here.
