Spokane Chiefs News Release
The Spokane Chiefs advanced to the second round of the WHL Playoffs behind their fourth win in a row over the Vancouver Giants on Sunday night in the Spokane Arena. The Chiefs won game six by a score of 3-1 setting up a Western Conference Playoff semi-final matchup with division rival Tri-City.
Mike Aviani led the way for the Chiefs with a goal and two assists and led both teams in points for the series with 11.
The Giants jumped out to an early lead at 1:40 of the first off a goal by Cain Franson with assists by Jackson Houck and Brett Kulak.
The Chiefs answered back later in the period scoring on a rush to the net by Aviani at 15:17. The opportunity was created by a beautiful outlet pass by goalie Eric Williams to Todd Fiddler at center ice who found the streaking Aviani.
The second period was a back and forth affair that saw Giants net minder Adam Morrison stop the first 16 shots he faced. However, on the 17th Corbin Baldwin blasted a slap shot from the blue line that rocketed past the outstretched glove of Morrison with just three seconds left in the second.
Eric Williams stopped all eight shots on goal he faced in the second to make the score 2-1 Spokane at the second intermission.
Mitch Holmberg scored his sixth goal of the series at 6:26 of the third period, shooting directly off a face off win by Aviani. Holmberg's six goals led all skaters in the series.
Shots on goal favored the Chiefs 32-27. Spokane finished the game 0-2 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill.
Games one and two of the second round will happen Friday and Saturday night in Tri-Cities with the puck dropping at 7:05 for both games.
The remaining dates of the series will be announced Monday morning.
