Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced two player moves prior to Monday night's homestand finale against the Kane County Cougars. Current Chiefs ace Dae-Eun Rhee is headed to the disabled list for the second time this season after feeling right elbow pain during his three-inning stint on Sunday. Pitcher Jay Jackson is the first 2008 draftee to join the Chiefs this summer while Jose Pina returns to Peoria. In addition, Blake Parker who spent the weekend at Triple-A Iowa, will head to Daytona instead of returning to the Chiefs as originally expected.
Rhee started for the Chiefs Sunday afternoon but lasted just three innings. The South Korean native allowed three runs on five hits and a career-high four walks. He took a no-decision as the Chiefs won their sixth straight contest. Rhee was on the DL from April 24-May 29 after suffering from right triceps tendonitis in his April 22 start at Lansing. Since returning from the DL, Rhee has made six starts, each increasing in workload until Sunday. He tossed five innings against Beloit on June 19 to begin the second half schedule and then turned in his second quality start with a six-inning win at Burlington last Tuesday. Overall, Rhee heads to the DL with a 4-1 record and a 1.80 ERA. The 19-year-old has struck out 33 and walked 16 in 40 innings of work.
Jackson will be the first Cubs 2008 draft pick to play for the Chiefs this season. The right-handed pitcher was chosen out of Furman University in the ninth round this June and made three appearances for Short-Season Boise. The 20-year-old made his debut with three runs allowed over two innings on June 17. Five days later he made his first career start and allowed just one run and one hit over three innings while striking out six. In his final Hawks outing, Jackson struck out a career-high seven over four innings out of the bullpen on Friday. The Taylors, South Carolina native went 9-2 for Furman this season and posted a 3.17 ERA in 15 starts. He struck out 94 and walked 40 over 99 1/3 innings en route to being named the Southern Conference Pitcher-of-the-Month in April. Jackson was also named to the SoCon All-Tournament team as a first baseman after hitting .412 with 11 RBI in his four tournament games. Jackson, whose given name is Randy, is the fourth highest drafted player in Paladin history and finished with a 13-6 career record and a .304 batting average with 23 home runs.
Pina started with the Chiefs last season and made 19 starts throughout the campaign, going 5-8 with a 4.29 ERA. In 23 overall appearances, Pina tossed 107 innings and struck out 71 batters while walking 37. He is currently tied for seventh on the Chiefs career list with 16 home runs allowed. The 22-year-old was injured in his August 3 start last season and began a rehab program in Spring Training. This season he made three starts for Boise on a strict pitch count. In those outings, the Dominican native struck out eight and walked just two over six innings while allowing just one run.
Parker left the Chiefs on Friday for Triple-A Iowa and was originally expected to rejoin the Chiefs after the weekend. However he will now head to Daytona which needs pitching help after a 10-inning game on Saturday and a 20-inning marathon Sunday night. Parker pitched twice for Iowa against Alburquerque this weekend and allowed two runs in three innings. Parker has been the Chiefs most reliable pitcher this season posting a 3-0 record with three saves and a 1.33 ERA in 23 relief appearances. He allowed his first run in 19 innings on Tuesday night in Burlington while picking up another hold in the Chiefs 5-4 win. Parker leads the Chiefs staff in strikeouts with 51 while walking just 18 in his 47 1/3 innings of work. Midwest League opponents are batting just .193 against the Fayetteville, Arkansas native. Parker, who turned 23 last week, has gone at least two innings in each of his last 10 outings and allowed a run in just two of those appearances. He was also the winning pitcher at the MWL All-Star game on June 17 when he struck out four batters in 1 2/3 innings. Since the team is on the road for the 4th of July holiday, the Chiefs will celebrate Monday night with a 6:30 start and a post-game fireworks show courtesy of Methodist Medical Center. The Monday game will be a full-price ticket night as opposed to a half-price Monday. On Tuesday the Chiefs head out on a 13-game, 14-day road trip to Appleton, WI, Davenport, IA, Geneva, IL and Grand Rapids, MI. The next Chiefs home game will be at 7:00 pm on Wednesday July 16 against the Lansing Lugnuts.
