Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits will be glad to return to Modern Woodmen Park for the start of a seven-game homestand on Tuesday, as Monday night's 17-5 loss to the Clinton LumberKings at Alliant Energy Field proved to be as unkind as they come.

Quad Cities (6-6, 39-37) found themselves trailing by seven runs after just one inning play and things quickly spiraled out of control from there as the two clubs split the four-game series. Every member of the Clinton (4-9, 45-34) batting order registered multiple hits, the first five batters scored multiple runs, and five other hitters had multi-RBI nights, led by Jonathan Greene's two-homer game that included four runs and four RBI.

The LumberKings wasted little time jumping all over River Bandits' starter Brian Broderick in the very first inning. The first five men that came to the plate all singled, including run-scoring knocks from Mitch Moreland and Greene. The bases were loaded with one away when Jose Felix clubbed a double off the wall to plate two runs, and Davis Stoneburner followed with a liner into the right-center gap that rolled all the way to the wall, resulting in a two-run triple. Kyle Murphy capped the rally with an infield single that brought Stoneburner home, as eight of the nine Clinton hitters registered hits and 12 men came to the plate to take a 7-0 lead.

Greene started playing longball in the second inning, blasted a two-run homer to left field that nearly reached Clinton's clubhouse. After Tim Smith doubled and scored in the fourth, Greene added a solo homer - his 11th of the year and fourth in the last three games - in the fifth inning. An unearned run crossed the plate later in that frame, giving Clinton a healthy 12-0 advantage.

Quad Cities showed signs of life in the top of the sixth inning, as Nick Peoples and Domnit Bolivar each hit two-run homers to cut the deficit to 12-4.

But the LumberKings went right back to work in the bottom of the sixth. Moreland made it a baker's dozen with a run-scoring double into the right field corner moments before a hit batsman loaded the bases. Cristian Santana then came to the plate as the only Clinton batter without a hit, but his 0-for-4 night turned around in a hurry thanks to a mammoth grand slam to left field, capping a five-run inning and extending the lead to 17-4.

The final run crossed the plate in the top of the seventh, as Peoples drove in his third run of the night with a sacrifice fly to reach the 17-5 final.

Michael Kirkman (1-0) earned the win for Clinton, carrying a one-hit shutout into the sixth before allowing four runs on four hits and two homers in the inning. He struck out six and walked one.

Broderick (3-6) took the loss, tagged for nine runs on 12 hits over 1.1 frames. He faced just 17 batters and retired four of them, allowing career highs for runs and hits.
