Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs have acquired goaltender Dawson Cowan (2005), as well as a fourth-round pick in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft and a third- and sixth-round pick in the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft from the Winnipeg ICE in exchange for goaltender Mason Beaupit (2003).
"Mason has been a very important player and person to our organization during his time in Spokane," Chiefs General Manager Matt Bardsley said. "While it is difficult to make this trade, we feel it is a great opportunity for him, while enabling us to continue to build our team for this season and the future. We are excited to add Dawson to our team and believe he and Cooper Michaluk can form an excellent tandem over the next few years."
Cowan, a 6-foot-1 goaltender from Warren, Manitoba, has played in five games with the ICE and currently has a 2.52 GAA and .901 SV%. In his second season in the league, Cowan was signed by Winnipeg in 2021 and recorded a 23-save shutout in his WHL debut last season against the Calgary Hitmen on March 15. He is currently 3-1-0-0 on the season.
Beaupit has played 71 games in net for Spokane, going 24-35-6-1 and posting a 3.83 GAA and a .888 SV%. He was originally the Chiefs' fourth-round pick (82nd overall) in the 2018 WHL Draft.
After winning 20 games last season, Beaupit was named the Chiefs' Player of the Year. Over his final 11 starts in the 2021-22 campaign, with the Chiefs battling for a playoff spot, Beaupit was 6-5-0-0 with a 2.88 GAA and .914 SV%. He won six straight starts from February 25 through March 12. On the last day of the regular season, with the Chiefs needing a win to clinch a playoff spot, Beaupit made 35 saves in 37 chances to help secure a 4-2 win at Victoria.
With nine games under his belt so far this season, Beaupit has a 5.58 GAA and .833 SV%. Originally from Surrey, B.C., the 6-foot-6 netminder was a fourth-round pick (108th overall) by the San Jose Sharks in the 2022 NHL Draft this summer.
"We thank Mason for all he has done for the Spokane Chiefs organization and wish him all the best going forward," Bardsley said.
