Chicago Hounds News Release


Elmira, Elmira, and Elmira: The Chicago Hounds spent their entire week in Elmira, NY where they met the Jackals three times in four nights. The end result was a record of 1-1-1 with the Hounds getting a victory in the last game.

11/22/06: The day before Thanksgiving, Chicago took on Elmira for the first time all season. The game started off well for the Hounds who managed to get the first goal of the game from forward Paul Caponigri at 1:45. After that, it was all Elmira, all the time. Two shorthanded goals marked the end for the Hounds. Brent Cullaton scored in the first to tie the game up and Frank Littlejohn fired the puck past goalie Marty Magers on a penalty shot at 14:43 of the second. That goal proved to be the winner and the Jackals skated away with a 4-1 victory. Kevin Tebbs made 38 saves on 39 shots and Marty Magers stopped 40 of 44. Neither team managed a power play goal in the contest.

11/24/06: Once the Turkey had a chance to digest, the teams were ready to do battle again. After the Jackals would get first blood on a power play goal by Mike Sgroi, Captain Steve Cygan would score back to back goals. The first was scored late in the first period and the second was a power play goal on the nice feed from John Spoltore which beat goaltender Kevin Tebbs. With the Hounds ahead by one, Scott Wray tied the game late in the second period. The teams traded goals in the third period and the game went to a shootout with Elmira winning it with the last shooter, Brent Cullaton. Magers finished with 45 saves on 48 shots, while tebbs made 25 saves on 28 shots.

11/24/06: After earning a point the night before in the shootout, the Hounds desperately wanted a victory to drive home with on Saturday night. This time, they wouldn't disappoint. After Scott Wray lifted a shot past goaltender Magers, the Hounds went on the attack with an unassisted goal by Mike Brolsma. The game was locked at 1-1 after the first period. Wray took advantage of a second period 5-3 opportunity when he blasted another goal past Magers. The Hounds were relentless and fought back with a power play goal by Darryl McArthur with just five seconds left in the period. The Hounds wouldn't look back after the stepped on the ice for the final period. Paul Caponigri netted the game winner short-handed at 4:08 of the third and McArthur scored the insurance marker on the power-play for his second of the game. Magers finished with 25 saves on 27 shots earning his fifth win of the season. Jackals' goalie Kris Tebbs took the loss with 18 saves on 22 shots.

December is a Busy Month: The month of December will bring a busy schedule for the Hounds. A total of 14 games will be played by Chicago including 9 home games. Head Coach Greg Puhalski is happy to have some time in his on rink, "It feels like we have been on the road for a long time and it will be good for our team to play more than one game at a time at the Sears Centre. We look forward to hosting some teams here." The first home game in December will be against the defending champs, the Kalamazoo Wings.

Marty Magers for President:

He has started every game but one for the Hounds this season. Marty Magers is playing stellar hockey and has given his team a chance to win every single night. Team captain Steve Cygan raved about his goaltender, "Marty gets better every game and instills confidence in this team. He has played as much as any goalie in the league, yet he continues to be dominant at his position."

Hockey Clinic for Mites and Squirts in process: The Chicago Hounds Hockey team is in the process of putting together a Mite & Squirts clinic @ the Sears Centre on Sat Dec 16th from 9am to noon. The details will be more specific in regards to the on ice activities as the date nears. We are checking to see how much interest there is in the hockey community to put together a function of this nature. One hour on ice clinic with instruction from our head coach Greg Puhalski and assistant coach Steve Cromie. There will be stations set up on the ice that cover, stick handling; shooting, passing and all other facets of the game, the players of the Hounds will be handling the stations. The package will include access to the ice for the clinic and of course the tickets will be good for the game that night.

The staff has worked diligently the past months to make this programs one of the leagues best. Up Next...The Champs: The next game for the Honds will be against the Kalamazoo Wings, the defending champions of the UHL. In the first meeting of the year, the Wings hosted the Hounds and defeated Chicago by a score of 4-1. That was the only game of the year where Marty Magers didn't man the crease. The lone Hounds goal of the game was scored by Bob Rapoza. Chicago defenseman Chris Busby says this time, the team is more prepared, "We feel that we are getting better as a team. It's always difficult playing against a team like Kalamazoo, but our team is playing better with each game. The road trip in Elmira gave us some confidence and Kalamazoo will have a fight on their hands." The Wings will only visit the Sears Centre twice this entire season.

Saturday Night Jackals: A week after their last game in Elmira, it's the Jackals turn to visit the Hounds. Chicago went 1-1-1 on the roadtrip winning their last game of the three. Marty Magers was in goal for all three appearances as was Kris Tebbs. Hounds forward Mike Broslma said the road-trip will make the game a little easier on Saturday night, "After playing them for three games in four nights, we are very prepared for what that team can deliver. However, it works both ways. I am sure they are ready for the battle as well."
