Cheechoo Strikes, Sharks Fall 2-1

WORCESTER, MA - The Sharks attempted comeback from a 2-0 deficit fell short as the Sound Tigers held on for a tightly contested 2-1 win at the DCU Center.

Robin Figren and Olivier Labelle scored for Bridgeport with Michael Haley picking up two assists. Jonathan Cheechoo scored his team leading 12th goal for the only Sharks tally to extend his point streak to a season high five games (3-4-7). Alex Stalock made 22 saves for the Sharks.

The first twenty minutes between the Sharks and Sound Tigers was a battle of defense as both teams failed to capitalize on power plays. Worcester ended the period on a 5-on-3 power play that carried over into the second period while Bridgeport failed to convert on their lone chance. The period ended 0-0 with the Sharks holding a 10-7 lead in shots.

In the second period, both teams continued their defense first play until late in the period. After a Sharks turnover at their own blue line, Robin Figren (10th) buried a snapshot past goalie Alex Stalock at 14:44. Tomas Marcinko and Michael Haley picked up assists on the go ahead goal. Just 0:52 later, the Sound Tigers struck again to take a 2-0 lead. Olivier Labelle roofed a backhand from in tight past Stalock for his 2nd of the season. Tony Romano and Michael Haley grabbed assists on the goal. After forty minutes Bridgeport led 2-0 with Worcester leading in shots 23-14.

Bridgeport would hold the 2-0 lead for the majority of the third period. After goalie Alex Stalock kept the Sharks in the game with a few good saves, the Sharks would finally get on the board. Jonathan Cheechoo would score his 12th of the season with just over five minutes remaining after slamming home a loose puck in the crease. Sean Sullivan and Andrew Desjardins grabbed assists on Cheechoo's team leading tally. Worcester would come close several times in the closing seconds with an extra attacker, but Bridgeport would hold on for the 2-1 win.

The Sharks record falls to 16-11-2-4 with 38 points and to 8-5-1-1 at the DCU Center.

Tony Lucia, Cam MacIntyre, Joe Loprieno and Frazer McLaren did not dress for the Sharks...The Sharks 3 game home win streak was snapped with the loss... Justin Braun played his first game in the AHL since November 21st when he was recalled by the San Jose Sharks.

On Friday, Worcester will close out 2010 with a 1pm battle in Bridgeport.
