Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN- Anthony Checky raced the baseball from JD Pulfer's arm to home plate and won. The Portage native came home on a Tillman Pugh ground ball to shortstop and dived around the tag of catcher Zane Chavez to give the Gary SouthShore RailCats (31-27) a 5-4 win over the Laredo Lemurs (32-37).
The walk-off win is the second in the row for the RailCats and gives them their first series win since playing at Sioux City at the beginning of the month.
Checky finished the day 2-5 with a run scored. He was caught stealing once on a close play at third base, but his speed impacted the game throughout. Pugh's speed was also a factor as Pulfer had to decide whether to come home with the game-saving throw or try to turn a double play. Pulfer elected to go home with it and Chavez could not get the tag on Checky.
Karl Triana pitched a great game for the RailCats, going six innings and allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out six batters and only walked one. It was Triana's ninth quality start of the season.
Santiago Rodriguez earned the win by pitching one inning and not allowing a run. Jeff Inman took the loss for the Lemurs by going 1.1 innings and giving up the walk-off run. Lemur starter Ryan Beckman lasted just four innings after surrendering four runs.
The Cats scored four runs in the first four innings. They grabbed one in the 2nd and the 3rd innings before scoring two in the 4th. Alex Crosby came through with the two RBI knock in the 4th frame.
The Lemurs were held in check until the 9th inning when they scored a pair of runs on RailCat reliever Moises Melendez. Denis Phipps started things with a solo home run and then Laredo got singles by Pulfer and Jesus Posso to even the score.
The RailCats improved to 9-5 in extra-inning games. The RailCats also upped their total to 11 wins and four losses during day games. Frank Martinez joined Checky with a multi-hit day and two runs scored. The RailCats committed one error.
Gary SouthShore tries for a sweep tomorrow at US Steel Yard with first pitch at 7:10 PM. Coverage begins at 6:45 PM on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
