Hemby Cup 2009 Raises Over $58,000
Several hundred fans and supporters poured into Time Warner Cable Arena on Saturday, February 21 for the 8th annual Hemby Cup. The 2009 Hemby Cup was a huge success raising over $58,000 to support the Arts For Life program at Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital and the Presbyterian Blume Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Clinic. Four honorary team captains from the Presbyterian Blume Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Clinic, Christopher Carriker-Lanning, Austin Caldwell, Madison Robinson, & Carmen Reitano were on hand for the ceremonial puck drop and check presentation. The check was presented by Microsoft and Bank of America and received by Pat Campbell, VP of Women's and Children's Services and Don Jonas, VP of the Presbyterian Hospital Foundation.
The Suits defeated the Geeks 8-5 in the 2009 Hemby Cup. The action got started fast and didn't slow down as the Suits team scored within the first minute of the game and jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the end of the first period. Microsoft fought back to make the game close heading into the final minutes of play. Presbyterian's own Dr. Spitz returned for the 2009 Hemby Cup and got into the action as a Forward with the Geeks. The honorees returned to the ice to deliver the Hemby Cup trophy to the Bank of America team following their victory. Nearly 200 fans joined the teams on the ice during the free post game skate which immediately followed the Hemby Cup game.
The Hemby Cup, which was established in 2001, has raised over $600,000 to benefit the Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital, the Presbyterian Blume Hematology Oncology Clinic, and the Presbyterian Children's Emergency Department. The money raised this year will continue to fund the Arts For Life program through the end of 2010.
The Hemby Cup event also helped to push the Charlotte Checkers into the record books with their largest home attendance in Checkers history. The Hemby Cup group was the largest set of tickets sold for the game and directly contributed to the new attendance record. Pat Campbell and honorees Christopher Carriker-Lanning & Madison Robinson returned along with Presbyterian Hospital Sr. VP & COO Amy Vance to accept the Hemby Cup check in front of the record crowd at the Charlotte Checkers game. The evening was concluded with Madison enjoying an on-ice zamboni ride at the 1st intermission, during which she helped lead the crowd in the chicken dance.
