Checkers Snap Seven-Game Crunch Streak with 4-1 Win
March 31, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Olivier Archambault tallied the only Syracuse Crunch goal as the team fell, 4-1, and had their seven-game winning streak snapped by the Charlotte Checkers tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
The loss moves the Crunch to 43-20-3-4 on the season and splits the four-game season series against Charlotte, 2-2-0-0.
Netminder Connor Ingram stopped 26-of-29 shots in net for the Crunch, while Jeremy Smith blocked 26-of-29 between the pipes for the Checkers. Syracuse converted on 1-of-5 power play opportunities and killed off all four Charlotte man-advantages.
The Checkers were first on the board 7:56 into the opening frame. Andrew Poturalski picked up the loose puck behind the net and sent it up the boards for Trevor Carrick to one-time in from the point. Greg McKegg earned the secondary assist.
Charlotte doubled their lead at the 6:52 mark of the second period. Poturalski came in on the left wing to draw Ingram out of position, then fed it across the slot for McKegg to toss into the open net. Aleksi Saarela earned a point on the play.
McKegg scored his second of the night just over a minute into the final stanza. Poturalski carried the puck into the zone and dropped it back for Saarela at the blue line. The forward threw the puck towards the far goal post where McKegg redirected it top shelf.
Five minutes later, Olivier Archambault stole one back for the Crunch on the power play. After Matthew Peca fed Erik Condra at the goal line, he slid a cross-slot feed for Archambault to blast a one-timer past Smith from the right circle.
Saarela added an empty-netter late in the game to secure a Checkers victory.
The Crunch head to Binghamton to take on the Devils on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
