Charlotte Checkers News Release

(Augusta, Georgia - Saturday, April 1, 2006) The Charlotte Checkers rebounded from a 7-3 defeat Friday night with a solid 3-1 victory over the Augusta Lynx Saturday night in Georgia. Checkers goalie Jeff Glass played a playoff-style game, earning his 16th victory of the season and stopping 46 Augusta shots. Jeremy Schreiber scored his first goal of the season for the Checkers and first professional goal, while Kenton Smith and Bruce Graham also tallied for Charlotte.

"It was a solid night for us all the way around," commented Charlotte coach Derek Wilkinson. "Jeff Glass played his fifth straight exceptional game, and our defense battled well tonight. I saw a lot of good things from us in this game."

Charlotte increased its lead over the Lynx by three points for fifth place in the ECHL's Southern Division. Each team has two games remaining in the regular season. Charlotte's victory Saturday night also helped them capture the ten-game season series with Lynx, winning six of ten matches.

The Checkers rode the fine play of Glass to take a 1-0 first period lead. While Glass frustrated the Lynx time after time, Charlotte managed to score the period's only goal as Schreiber tallied his first professional marker at 4:43. Augusta outshot the Checkers 16 to eight in the first frame.

In the second period Glass continued to sparkle stopping all 15 shots he faced, while the Checkers continued to pad their lead. Charlotte scored on its only power play of the period as Smith got credit for a tip in by Wall at 3:34 for a 2-0 Charlotte advantage. The Checkers increased their lead late in the period as Graham converted a two-on-one break, giving Charlotte a 3-0 lead through two periods.

In the final period the Lynx finally ruined Glass' shutout bid, as Mike Erickson scored with eight and a half minutes to go in the game to trim Charlotte's lead to 3-1. But the Checkers hunkered down the rest of the way and preserved the two-goal lead for the 3-1 final.

The win improved Charlotte's record to 32-33-5 for 69 points, while Augusta fell to 30-34-6 for 66 points. The Checkers will play either the Greenville Grrrowl or the South Carolina Stingrays in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Checkers will continue their season-ending, four-game road trip next Friday night when they'll travel to Columbia for a 7;30 p.m. face-off against the Inferno.
