San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - Give Round Two to the Idaho Steelheads. Greg Rallo scored in the first round of a shootout, as Idaho won the second of a three-game series with the San Diego Gulls, 4-3 on Sunday night at ipayOne Center.
Despite the outcome, the Gulls (34-28-7) picked up a point to remain unbeaten in their last four games (3-0-1) and six overall at home (5-0-1). They also picked up some ground in the standings, pulling within five points of third-place Bakersfield and six of second-place Long Beach. Both the Condors and Ice Dogs were idle Sunday.
Idaho (42-21-8) remains undefeated in 10 of its last 11 games (9-1-1).
San Diego goaltender Kris Mayotte notched 40 saves in his third professional start. But it wasn't enough, as the Gulls failed to score on any of their four chances in the shootout. San Diego is now 4-1-1 against Idaho this season, and the two clubs will square off again Wednesday.
The game opened with some physical play in the first period, when the teams were whistled for a combined 14 penalties for 36 total minutes. The Steelheads struck first, just 1:26 into the match to make it 1-0.
The Gulls responded less than five minutes later with Steve Hildenbrand's 28th score on the season - good for second on the club. With the goal, Hildenbrand extended his personal scoring streak to seven games.
The game went back and forth all throughout the second period, when the Steelheads out-shot San Diego 17-11. At the 5:06 mark, the Gulls took their first lead at 2-1 on Conrad Martin's second goal in two professional games since joining San Diego on Saturday. But Idaho answered right back with a short-handed score to knot it back up at two apiece at 7:46.
The Gulls took another one-goal advantage when Rob Flynn lasered his seventh tally of the year into the net with 7:30 remaining in the second. Once again, however, the Steelheads wouldn't go away. They pulled even with only 23.5 seconds before the intermission to make it 3-3. And that's how it stayed until overtime, when neither club could score.
Notes: San Diego is unbeaten in 16 of its last 21 games (14-5-2)... Idaho is just 3-for-44 on the power play against San Diego this season... The Gulls are 20-9-5 at home, with two more regular season games left at the ipayOne Center... They have won four of the last five against the Steelheads after dropping the first head-to-head meeting...
San Diego and Idaho will meet for the final time in the regular season Wednesday at the ipayOne Center, with game-time set for 7:05 p.m. The Gulls close out the homestand Friday against the Phoenix Roadrunners at 7:35 p.m. It will be Ashworth Callaway Golf Night and special Gulls golf balls will be given away. San Diego finishes the regular season Saturday in Stockton before opening the playoffs.
