Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings pulled out all the cards in their final away game of the season against top ranked Alaska Aces. Despite a third period effort to close a two goal deficit, the Salmon Kings were toppled by the Aces 3-0 in front of a sellout crowd of 6,451 at the Sullivan Arena.
Winger Justin Maiser scored his 11th goal of the season to give the Aces a 1-0 lead 1:59 into the first period. Defenseman Matt Shasby threw the puck towards the net, and Maiser deflected the shot past Netminder Rob McVicar.
On the second Alaska power play of the night, Forward Corbin Schmidt increased the Aces lead 2-0. Schmidt tucked a shot short-side top-corner from the left of the net at 9:35 into the first. Shasby and Kimbi Daniels assisted on the first two goals.
McVicar kept the Salmon Kings in the game through the second period making 12 saves, and John Decaro stopped 7 Victoria shots. The score remained 2-0 for Alaska after two frames.
Leading scorer Alex Leavitt earned his 24th goal of the season and third goal of the series, beating McVicar with a one-timer on another power play. Leavitt fired the shot top corner from the left circle to give the Aces the 3-0 edge at 4:56 into the final period.
Victoria was 0-5 on the power play, and Alaska scored twice out of four chances with the man advantage. Decaro posted his first win and first shutout as a pro, and McVicar suffered his 13th loss of the season. Alaska outshot Victoria 36-20.
