Checkers Raise Over $440K For Charities During 2007-08 Season
May 2, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers had yet another record breaking year off the ice in 2007-08 as the club helped raise more than $440,000 for local charities and other community outreach programs. This number breaks last year's mark by more than $40,000.
The Checkers raised slightly over $400,000 in 2006-07, which at the time was the highest number in Checkers history-until this previous season. The grand total for the 2007-08 season comes in at $443,170.
Leading the way this season was money raised by the many ticket fundraising programs established during the season that helped generate just over $100,000. The Checkers once again teamed up with Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital to present the Hemby Cup. Along with help from Microsoft, the event helped raise $100,000 for Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital.
The Checkers "Race Night" presented by Autotrader.com was held on Jan. 18 and raised $50,000 for Victory Junction Gang Camp and the Hendrick Marrow Program. The team's 2nd Annual "Pink in the Rink" took place on Feb. 10. The event put $20,000 towards the American Cancer Society, Carolina Breast Friends and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Charlotte Affiliate.
The Checkers held their annual "Salute to Heroes" on March 8. The Charlotte Fire Department, Mecklenburg EMS Agency, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office joined forces to help raise $20,000 for scholarship programs and families from each organization. The night also benefited the Hometown Heroes Foundation and many other Heroes related charities.
The breakdown of amount raised:
