Atlanta Gladiators News Release

The Gladiators pulled into Charlotte needing every possible point to keep their hopes alive for a Kelly Cup Playoffs birth, but Andrew Carroll sent the Gladiators home one point with an overtime game winning goal. The Gladiators scored first in the second period and held their one goal lead into the third. Gwinnett was unable to hold the lead in third, and eventually fell 2-1 in overtime to the Checkers.

Each team had some good scoring chances in the first period, but were unable to convert. The Checkers' Mike Taylor put the puck behind David Brown, but Matt Schepke had collided with the Gladiator's netminder so the goal was waved off.

Gwinnett opened up the scoring 7:09 into the second period. Pat Galivan tapped a puck free to force a turnover in the Gladiators' attacking zone. Tom Zanoski controlled the loose puck and found Matt Caruana open in the slot. Caruana slid a shot under the pads of goaltender Ryan Munce to give the Gladiators a very important 1-0 lead.

The Checkers were able to knot the game up at one early in the second period. Mike Berube controlled a puck at the left point and walked along the boards. Berube fired a shot from the left half-wall to beat David Brown on the short side.

The game went into overtime tied at one apiece, and Andrew Carroll would decide the contest with just 28 seconds left in the frame. Tyler Doig found room to skate along the left boards, and quickly centered a pass to Carroll in front of the Gladiator goal. Carroll buried a shot inside the right post to give the Checkers the victory.

The Gladiators were 0-3 on the Applebees power play while Charlotte went 0-2 with an extra skater. The Gladiators fell to 31-31-4-3 and the Checkers improved to 42-21-4-3.
