Checkers Can't Hold Lead, Lose to Gladiators, 3-2

Gwinnett, G.A. - The Checkers had a one goal lead twice against the Gladiators in Gwinnett but were unable to pull away as the team surrendered two goals in the final period which resulted in a 3-2 defeat.

The Checkers started the scoring in the first period while on the power play. Charlotte forward Jeff Miles wristed a shot through a screen and beat Gwinnett goalie Josh Johnson on the glove side at 6:01 putting up the Checkers 1-0. The Gladiators tied the contest when a turnover in the Checkers zone resulted in a shot from Gwinnett defenseman Jeff Mason that beat Checkers netminder Jeff Jakaitis at 14:05 locking the contest at 1-1 after twenty minutes.

The only goal of the second period was scored by Lee Falaredau as he blasted a shot past the glove of Johnson at 17:15. This retrieved the one goal advantage putting the Checkers up 2-1 after two periods of hockey.

The Gladiators got an early goal in the third period when Pat Bateman fired a rebound shot past Jakaitis at 2:48 locking the game at 2-2. The game winning goal was scored late by Brandon Kaleniecki after he shot a rebound home through a sprawling Jakaitis after the intial shot was stopped off Matt Siddall at 17:28. Checkers would be unable to find a goal late in the contest and lose 3-2.
