Greenville Drive News Release
New York, NY - The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is never too far away. As Drive centerfielder Che-Hsuan Lin stepped into the batter's box in the top of the seventh as a pinch hitter, his headshot came onto the videoboard at Yankee Stadium - wearing a Boston Red Sox hat. And then came the boos.
But Lin quickly silenced the hometown critics, belting a first pitch offering from Ryan Mattheus (representing the Colorado Rockies organization) into the leftfield bleachers at "The House that Ruth Built" for a two-run homer.
"I didn't really think too much about the first at bat," said Lin through interpreter Mickey Jiang. "I was just looking for a good pitch to hit and I got lucky."
The product of Taiwan added a bloop single to left in the top of the ninth, finishing the game 2-for-2 in the World All-Stars 3-0 victory over the USA All-Stars.
Following the game, Lin was named the recipient of the Larry Doby Award, given to the most valuable player of the Futures Game. Lin becomes the second straight Taiwanese player to garner this honor, as Chin-Lung Hu (representing the Los Angeles Dodgers) won the award at AT&T Park in San Francisco in 2007.
Lin will not have much time to revel in the glory as he will rejoin his Drive teammates for their series finale with the Lakewood BlueClaws in New Jersey on Monday. Appearing in 80 games with the Drive, Lin ranks third on the team in batting average (.251), third in RBI (34), first in base on balls (39), and first in runs scored (52).
In addition, he ranks first in the entire Boston Red Sox minor league system with 26 stolen bases.
This isn't the first time Lin has provided late-inning heroics in the recent weeks. On June 29th, Lin concluded a 4-for-5, six RBI performance with a two-run walk-off homer versus the Asheville Tourists.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Wednesday, July 16th when they begin an eight-game homestand with the Lake County Captains, affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.
