Charleston RiverDogs News Release
Charleston scored four runs on four hits in each of the first two innings and the RiverDogs cruised to a 9-3 victory over the West Virginia Power in South Atlantic League action Sunday afternoon in front of 3,703 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Shortstop Carmen Angelini went 3-for-4 with two runs driven in and two stolen bases to pace the 11-hit attack.
With the victory, Charleston snaps a two-game losing skid to West Virginia and improves to 9-13 in the season's second half and 54-38 on the season. The RiverDogs also remain unbeaten in Sunday home games, increasing the unblemished note to 6-0.
The Power's eight-game winning streak came to a halt and they fall to 18-6 since the All-Star break and 50-43 on the season. Entering Sunday's game, West Virginia had won 14 of its last 15 games.
Charleston sent eight batters to the plate in each of the first two innings, scoring four runs each time.
In the first stanza, Charleston chased West Virginia starter Dan Merklinger (3-6) after the first seven batters recorded four runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning. Bradley Suttle had an RBI single, Austin Krum doubled home two more and Angelini singled home the inning's fourth run.
In the second frame, the RiverDogs witnessed Austin Romine double home a run, Suttle loft a run-scoring sacrifice fly, Brandon Laird drive an RBI single and Angelini single home the hosts' eighth run against reliever Reed Dickert.
West Virginia came alive in the fourth when Caleb Gindl singled to third for the Power's first hit of the game against RiverDogs starter Wilkins de la Rosa (5-3). Gindl then scored on Zelous Wheeler's RBI double to right center.
The Power put two more runs on the board in the seventh after Steffan Wilson singled, Ulrich Snijders drew a walk and Lee Haydel tripled them home to make the score 8-3.
Charleston added an unearned run in the eighth off reliever Pedro Lambertus when Matt Morris doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored on shortstop Matt Cline's fielding error.
De la Rosa was solid for Charleston, going six complete innings and allowing one run on three hits while striking out five and walking two. Ryan Zink replaced de la Rosa in the seventh and threw two frames while allowing two runs on two hits while striking out one and walking one. Closer Jonathan Ortiz fanned three of the four batters he faced for an uneventful ninth.
For the game, Charleston pitchers fanned nine West Virginia hitters.
Dickert who lasted 3.1 frames and surrendered four runs on five hits. Jose Garcia threw three full frames and allowed one hit before yielding to Lambertus.
Angelini collected three of the RiverDogs' 11 hits while Suttle, Romine and Austin Krum each contributed a pair.
West Virginia recorded five hits on the afternoon with no one individual having more than one, although Haydel drove home two of his team's three runs.
Since the All-Star break, Charleston had only five innings in which it scored three or more runs until Sunday - when the RiverDogs scored four times in each of the first two innings. Further, Charleston hadn't scored four runs in an inning since getting five in the fourth inning of a 6-3 win at Augusta on July 5.
The final game of this four-game block and eight-game homestand is set for Monday night at 7:05 p.m. with Charleston calling on righty Dellin Betances (4-3, 3.74 ERA) to take the hill while West Virginia will counter with lefty Evan Frederickson (0-2, 6.23 ERA).
