Chaumont Celebrates Birthday With Hat-Trick
November 21, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS - --- Bobby Chaumont scored a three-goal hat-trick on his 25th birthday, defenseman Derek Landmesser earned his 400th career CHL assist, and Ian Keserich was 1:19 away from a shutout in his first RiverKings start of the season. After all that, the RiverKings had broken their longest winless streak of the year in a 6-1 thrashing of the Missouri Mavericks on Saturday, November 21st in Southaven.
Mississippi struck quickly against the Mavericks with two goals in the first 1:35 of the game. Ryan Held scored his team-leading 13th goal of the year at 31 seconds, flipping the puck over a sprawled goaltender Mike Gorman for a 1-0 lead.
Derek Landmesser was given one of the two assists on the play, his 400th CHL career assist, making him the tenth CHL player to reach that level. Ryan Campbell was given the other assist on the goal.
Gorman was shaken up on the play, but remained in the game for another 1:04 before Bobby Chaumont started celebrating his birthday with his seventh goal of the year, a shot from the slot at 1:35 for a 2-0 Mississippi advantage.
Gorman was then replaced at that point by Doug Groenestege in goal for the Mavericks and there would be no further scoring in the first period.
The second period was busy, both on the scoreboard and in the penalty box. On the scoreboard, Bobby Chaumont completed a three-goal natural hat-trick, scoring his second goal of the night at 10:37 on the power play, followed by his ninth goal of the year and third of the night at 12:01.
Ryan Campbell scored a shorthanded goal at 17:19 for a 5-0 lead, which became 6-0 at the end of the period when Louis Dumont netted his fourth of the year with just two seconds left in the second period of play.
Meanwhile, several skirmishes broke out between the teams in the second period, amounting to a combined 71 minutes in penalty time in the middle 20 minutes alone.
There was no scoring in the third period until Missouri was able to stop the shutout bid of RiverKings' goaltender Ian Keserich with a goal from Tyler Fleck with 1:19 remaining for the final score of 6-1.
Keserich won his first decision in his first start, stopping 25 of 26 shots on goal by the Mavericks. Mike Gorman was removed from the game after the RiverKings' second goal, but not before allowing two goals, including the game-winning goal, as his record fell to 1-4-1 on the season.
Mississippi scored once in four power play chances and also scored a shorthanded goal. Missouri was 0-for-6 in special teams play Saturday night.
With the victory, the RiverKings stopped a three-game winless streak and moved the record back to .500 at 8-8-1. Missouri fell to 4-8-1 with the loss.
Next up for the RiverKings will be a Thanksgiving week road trip, playing in Allen, Texas on Wednesday, November 25, followed by a weekend pair of games in Rapid City, South Dakota. The next home game for the RiverKings will come on Friday, December 4 against the Colorado Eagles, starting at 7:05 PM. It will be "Teddy Bear Toss" night, support the U.S. Marines' "Toys for Tots" program.
