Charleston Mugs Tourists 10-4 in Series Opener

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The Charleston RiverDogs used a five-run eighth inning to put away the Asheville Tourists and took home the first game of the series 10-4 Tuesday night at McCormick Field.

Charleston (3-3 in the second half, 37-39 overall) took a 5-3 advantage into the top of the eighth. Nine batters came to the plate in the frame and five insurance runs were added to the lead.

Alexander Palma and Collin Slaybaugh began the inning with back-to-back singles. Bo Thompson drove in Palma with a one-out double to right. Jorge Mateo cleared the bases with a two-run single, advanced to second on the throw, and took third on a wild pitch by Shane Halley. An Austin Aune triple, one of his two RBI on the night, chased Halley from the game.

Yoely Bello entered the game and struck out Chris Breen for the second out. Isaias Tejeda connected for a RBI double that brought Aune home. The RiverDogs scored the five runs on six hits in the inning and led 10-3.

Charleston got on the board first with two runs in the second inning when Thompson hit an RBI double to left. Asheville (4-2, 36-40) cut the lead in half on a sacrifice fly by Omar Carrizales in the bottom of the third. Another two-run double off the bat of Breen increased Charleston's lead to 4-1.

Aune was the star of the game offensively for the RiverDogs. He went 3-for-4 with a single, double, and a triple. He also scored two runs and drove in a pair, with the other RBI coming on a double that plated Mateo in the top of the seventh.

David Palladino (2-5) struck out a season-high seven batters in a career-high 6 1/3 innings and earned his first win since May 9. Dillon McNamara entered the game with Charleston in front 5-3, and pitched the last 2 2/3 innings to pick up his fifth save of the season. Ryan Castellani (0-5) is still winless in 15 starts with Asheville.

The RiverDogs have won their last three games in Asheville and have tallied 35 runs on 47 hits in the three games. They also round out the month of June with a 13-13 record.
