CHARLESTON, SC - Zoilo Almonte and DeAngelo Mack both homered over the left-field wall, as the Charleston RiverDogs defeated the Rome Braves, 5-0 in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of a crowd of 4,649 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Charleston posts its first shutout at Riley Park since July 19, 2009 against Kannapolis winning its fourth straight game overall improving to 9-10, while Rome lost for the fifth game in a row in dropping to 7-12.
Jose Ramirez (1-0), in notching his first SAL victory, combined with relievers Mike Solbach and Ronny Marte on a five-hit shutout. The Dominican native worked 6.0 flawless innings of three-hit ball while walking four and tied a career high with nine strikeouts.
Charleston wasted no time lighting the scoreboard, pushing two runs across the plate in the bottom half of the first inning on Rob Lyerly's two-out RBI single to left field against Rome starter Arodys Vizcaino for a 2-0 advantage.
The lead grew to 3-0 in the third on Almonte's opposite-field home run to left-center. Vizcaino (2-2), a former Yankees farmhand who pitched with Staten Island in 2009, allowed all three runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Mack delivered his opposite-field two-run jack in the fifth against reliever Robinson Lopez upping the score to 5-0.
Almonte's two hits led Charleston's six as a team, while Luke Murton roped a first-inning double increasing his hitting streak to 13 games. Matt Weaver went 2-for-4 pacing Rome's five-hit attack.
